Inside the studio

This is a real class

Not a promo shoot. Regular students, regular Tuesday, learning Lady Style in Reykjavík.

Lady Style — Hector Latin Dance, Reykjavík
What we teach

Three ways to move

Every class is built on authentic Cuban Casino — the social, circular, playful salsa danced on the island. Not a watered-down version of it.

👫
Group class

Couples Salsa (Casino)

Partnerwork, leading and following, and the figures that make Cuban salsa social. Come alone or with a partner — we rotate so everyone dances.

💃
Basic & Intermediate

Lady Style

Movement, technique and styling for women. Body isolation, arm work, turns and the attitude that turns steps into dancing.

🕺
Technique

Men Style

Technique and styling for men. Posture, footwork, musicality and clean leading — the details that separate a dancer from someone who knows the steps.

Beyond weekly classes

Workshops & events

🔥

Specialised workshops

Intensive sessions focused on a single thing: technique, styling, musicality or a specific set of Casino figures. Perfect if you want to break a plateau fast.

🎉

Corporate & private events

Professional animation, teaching or performance for company events, team-building, weddings and private parties. Tailored to your group, in English or Spanish.

Find your level

Where do I start?

Honest placement matters more than ego. Pick the level that matches your experience — and if you're unsure, just say so in the form. Hector will put you where you belong.

Beginner

No experience, no partner and no rhythm required. You will dance on your first day. This is where almost everyone here started — and where our new groups open.

Intermediate

For dancers who have completed at least one course and are comfortable with the basic Casino steps. Several intermediate groups run every week; tell us what you've done and Hector will place you in the right one.

Advanced

For experienced dancers who can follow complex figures and rueda calls at social speed, without stopping to think.

The HLD difference

Why dance here

01

Expert instruction

A director with 15+ years of international teaching and choreography behind him — not a hobbyist running a side project.

02

100% English

Every class is taught in English. No translating, no guessing, no getting lost halfway through the count.

03

Multicultural community

Icelanders and internationals in the same room. Ekki bara dans — a place to actually meet people.

04

No experience, no partner

Most people walk in alone and having never danced. That's the normal starting point here, not the exception.

Our director

Hector Alvarado

Born in Venezuela, Hector is a professional teacher, dancer and choreographer. In 2009 he founded Ritmos Dance Studio Venezuela. It opened as a salsa school and grew into one of the largest in the country, with over 250 students, later adding traditional bachata and kizomba to a full program built around partnerwork and Rueda de Casino — authentic Cuban salsa, or Casino, as it's called on the island.

He taught classes and workshops across the entire country and was one of the first teachers to bring kizomba to Venezuela. He later spent time teaching in Colombia, and then settled in Iceland. Here he founded Hector Latin Dance, and for the past year and a half has been teaching Lady Style, Men Style and couples dancing to a growing community in Reykjavík.

Hector Latin Dance is a structured, professional dance school with a program designed to connect people through authentic movement — whether that's weekly classes, intensive workshops, or corporate and private events.

Still have a question? These channels are for things this page didn't answer — the schedule, your level, whether a group has space. They don't book your place. Only the form does that.

Optional — we like to celebrate them in class.

Why it is good for you

What dancing does to you

People come to have fun. What they get on top of that has been measured, and it is not small.

It protects your memory

A study that followed people over 75 for five years found dancing was the only physical activity associated with a lower risk of dementia — 76%, the largest reduction of any leisure activity measured.1

It changes your brain

Six months of dance training increased hippocampal volume in healthy seniors. Conventional endurance training did too — but only the dancers improved their balance.2

It lifts mood and lowers anxiety

A meta-analysis of 41 controlled studies with 2,374 participants found dance and dance-movement therapy reduce depression and anxiety and improve quality of life.3

It bonds you to people

Moving in sync with others raises the pain threshold — a marker of endorphin release — and measurably increases how close you feel to the people you danced with.4
